Much of the current scholarship on DVDs within the context of India specifically, and the global South more generally has explored emerging informal economies, shifting urban landscapes, and ...re-mapped relations within and between the global South and North with respect to copyright and piracy. In order to broaden the scope of this research, I approach the DVD as a textual object and explore how the DVD technology's (re)produces intergenerational cinephilia as well as 'visual' and 'aural' stardom. In pursuing this line of inquiry in the context of Bombay cinema, I seek to widen the range of available textual analyses of DVD, which are largely anchored in western cinema. This research focuses on the fidelity and technical virtuosity of sound on DVDs; here, sound, remains, an aural entity. A cursory glance at the DVDs produced in India show that the picturization sound is also a crucial feature of DVD organization. DVD compilations of Hindi film music offer a particularly rich site for beginning research on how DVD technology has re-structured sound, stardom and cinephilia as the songs are untethered from the filmic narrative and re-classified.
Asthma is characterized by chronic respiratory tract inflammation, which requires periodic inhalation therapy. Because the operational technique differs among the various available inhalers, the ...correct method of use is unclear, which can result in reduced treatment efficacy, misdiagnosis of treatment-resistant asthma, and consequential treatment step-up. Thirty-three outpatients (13 men, 20 women) under treatment for asthma (12 by puffer metered-dose inhaler, and 21 by dry powder inhaler containing inhaled corticosteroids), with an Asthma Control Test (ACT) score of 20-24, were randomly assigned to the DVD-viewing group (17 subjects) or non-viewing group (16 subjects).

•Activated carbons (ACs) were synthesized from DVDs and CDs wastes as precursor.•CNTs coated on the surface of the as-prepared ACs from CDs and DVDs.•The CNTs/CDsAC and CNTs/DVDsAC ...adsorbents were tested for the adsorption of AO7.•Influential parameters, kinetics, equilibrium and reusability were studied.
The purpose of the present work was to prepare activated carbon (AC) from low-cost wastes, such as digital versatile discs (DVDs) and compact discs (CDs), coated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for adsorption of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) from dye-containing solutions. The surface morphology of the activated carbons from DVDs (DVDsAC), CDs (CDsAC), CNTs, CNTs/DVDsAC and CNTs/CDsAC was determined by XRD and SEM techniques. SEM micrographs of adsorbents clearly show a heterogeneous porous surface with irregular pores in the structure of the activated carbons. Results showed that CNTs/DVDsAC (30.3mg/g) and CNTs/CDsAC (32.8mg/g), in comparison with DVDsAC (15.1mg/g) and CDsAC (9.9mg/g), were more efficient adsorbents for the adsorption of AO7. The dye adsorption amount (qe) increases with a reduction in the solution pH, adsorbent dosage and an increase in the initial concentration of AO7 for these two more efficient adsorbents. Pseudo-second order model and Langmuir isotherm fitted with the experimental data. The spontaneous and endothermic processes were analyzed by the thermodynamic studies for the adsorption of AO7. The negative values of ΔG, and the positive values of ΔH and ΔS parameters indicate that the adsorption of AO7 onto CNTs/CDsAC and CNTs/DVDsAC was spontaneous and endothermic, respectively.
The Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme (DVDS) aims to reduce harm through improving access to background information for people with concerns about a romantic partner’s behaviour. This reduction is ...predicated on the disclosure recipient taking steps to ensure their safety, either by managing the situation or ending the relationship. As fewer than half of the thousands of annual applications result in disclosures, and no information is held about any subsequent steps taken by applicants or recipients, it is unclear whether or not the DVDS is actually reducing domestic violence. Nonetheless, Scotland and Northern Ireland have implemented their own variations of this policy, as have some Canadian and Australian states. \ud \ud This policy analysis draws on empirical research into the DVDS in terms of its national and local operation in order to assess the strengths and limitations of its capacity to reduce harm. The analysis outlines how the policy may be difficult to access; deflect – rather than prevent – harm; shift safeguarding responsibilities onto the most vulnerable; and be incorrectly interpreted in terms of outcome. The paper makes recommendations for improvement in order to enhance the policy’s efficacy.
•We fabricate a humidity sensor with laser-scribed graphene electrode and graphite oxide sensing layer.•The fabrication process is done by a low power (5 mW) DVD drive.•The LSG-GO humidity sensor ...operates in the relative humidity (RH) range of 19 %–97.4 %.•The LSG based humidity sensor demonstrates high sensitivity (4770.14 pF/% RH).•Excellent sensing stability for more than 30 days has been demonstrated.
Monitoring the environmental humidity are of great significance to human comfort and product quality in many fields. However, high performance humidity sensors are difficult to be widely used because of their cost and complex preparation process. It is also highly desirable to develop a facile fabrication method that is capable of producing humidity sensors of customized size, shape, and geometry. Here, using a low power DVD drive, we successfully fabricate a highly sensitivity and low-cost humidity sensor, consisting of laser-scribed graphene (LSG) electrode and graphite oxide (GO) sensing layer. The LSG-GO humidity sensor operates in the relative humidity (RH) range of 19 %–97.4 %, demonstrating high sensitivity (4770.14 pF/% RH), quick response/recovery, and excellent sensing stability. In addition, the possible humidity sensing mechanism is discussed with the help of impedance spectroscopy. These results indicate that the LSG/GO sensor, enabled by the facile fabrication process with low power DVD drives, demonstrates promising potential with broad application prospects.
1,25(OH)2D3 (vitamin D) appears essential for the normal development of dopaminergic neurons. Vitamin D affects dopamine synthesis and metabolism as well as expression of glial cell line–derived ...neurotrophic factor (GDNF), which is crucial for the survival of dopaminergic neurons. We investigated the role of vitamin D on GDNF and its receptors protooncogene tyrosine–protein kinase receptor Ret (C‐Ret) and GDNF family receptor alpha 1 (GFRα1) signaling. To this end, we used a developmental vitamin D–deficient rat model and SH‐SY5Y cells transfected with vitamin D receptor (VDR). The absence of vitamin D ligand in gestation reduces C‐Ret expression, but not GDNF and GFRα1, in embryo forebrains. Overexpression of VDR in SH‐SY5Y in the absence of ligand (mimicking in vivo developmental vitamin D deficiency) also suppressed C‐Ret mRNA levels. In the presence of vitamin D, C‐Ret mRNA and protein expression were increased. The chromatin immunoprecipitation results suggested that C‐Ret is directly regulated by vitamin D via VDR. GDNF was also increased by vitamin D in these cells. Our small interfering RNA studies showed that knocking down VDR leads to an increase in C‐Ret in the absence of ligand. Finally, we confirmed the inverse relationship between GFRα1 and C‐Ret, as knocking down C‐Ret led to increases in GFRα1 expression. These data extend our knowledge of the diverse and important roles played by vitamin D in dopamine physiology.—Pertile, R.A.N., Cui, X., Hammond, L., Eyles, D.W. A multiplex competitive microimmunoassay for the simultaneous determination of gliadin, casein, β-lactoglobulin, and ovalbumin is presented. The assay in microarray format is performed on a DVD where ...the allergens are physisorbed on the polycarbonate surface of the disc. The immunointeraction is detected using a mixture of specific gold-labeled antibodies and the signal amplified with the silver enhancement method. The optical density of the precipitate, read by a DVD drive, is related to the concentration of the four allergens in sample. An optimized protocol for the simultaneous extraction of the allergen proteins from food samples is also addressed. The suitability of the method is demonstrated for the simultaneous quantitative extraction and determination of the targeted allergens in spiked baby foods, juices, and beers. The sensitivity (EC50) of the multiplexed assay was 0.04, 0.40, 0.08, and 0.16 mg L−1 for gliadin, casein, β-lactoglobulin, and ovalbumin, respectively, and the recovery results from the analysis of food samples ranged from 72 to 117%. A portable, easy-to-use, array-based bioanalytical method is developed for quantification of food allergens with a limit of detection below the accepted levels of the international legislations, which allows promotion of food safety and quality.
