We explore some consequences of the ``alpha model,'' also called the
``Lagrangian-averaged'' model, for two-dimensional incompressible
magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. This model is an extension ...of the
smoothing procedure in fluid dynamics which filters velocity fields locally
while leaving their associated vorticities unsmoothed, and has proved useful
for high Reynolds number turbulence computations. We consider several known
effects (selective decay, dynamic alignment, inverse cascades, and the
probability distribution functions of fluctuating turbulent quantities) in
magnetofluid turbulence and compare the results of numerical solutions of the
primitive MHD equations with their alpha-model counterparts' performance for
the same flows, in regimes where available resolution is adequate to explore
both. The hope is to justify the use of the alpha model in regimes that lie
outside currently available resolution, as will be the case in particular in
three-dimensional geometry or for magnetic Prandtl numbers differing
significantly from unity. We focus our investigation, using direct numerical
simulations with a standard and fully parallelized pseudo-spectral method and
periodic boundary conditions in two space dimensions, on the role that such a
modeling of the small scales using the Lagrangian-averaged framework plays in
the large-scale dynamics of MHD turbulence. Several flows are examined, and for
all of them one can conclude that the statistical properties of the large-scale
spectra are recovered, whereas small-scale detailed phase information (such as
e.g. the location of structures) is lost.
Here, the characteristics of post-LGM (Last Glacial Maximum) incised valley fills and their depositional sequence were examined by analyzing the SKM core collected in the Sukumo coastal lowlands, ...southwestern Shikoku Island, which has been subject to extensive seismic subsidence due to the large Nankai Trough earthquakes. Here we provide results of sedimentological, radiocarbon dating, and paleoenvironmental analysis. Sediments of the SKM core show clear indications that the succession was influenced by post-glacial sea level change. The Matsuda River incised valley formed during the LGM (26.5-19 ka), and was infilled by fluvial sand and gravel in the late Pleistocene. Following postglacial transgression, sea level rose by 30 m (a.s.l.) at 9.8 ka, and the incised valley became an estuarine environment. As sea level continued to rise, the estuarine environment was replaced by an inner bay mud bottom, and maximum water depth was reached at 7.5 ka. The 7.3 ka Kikai caldera eruption in southern Kyushu Island caused heavy K-Ah ash fall in southwestern Shikoku Island, and frequent large-scale lahars occurred immediately after the ash fall because of the proximity to the volcanic source. After the ash fall, the K-Ah secondary sediments were deposited rapidly in the inner bay environment and caused rapid sea level regression. After 7.0 ka, a delta region began to develop, which might have been due to the large K-Ah ash fall. At 5 ka, sea level reached +2.5 m (a.s.l.), estimated from the Sukumo midden, and is recognized as the Holocene marine limit in this area. This information on relative sea level change during the past 10,000 years suggests that the Sukumo Bay area has not subsided as a result of seismic-induced crustal deformation.
A consequence of the economic crisis that affected Italy in the last years is a significant decrease of economic resources for libraries, especially for those depending from the Ministry for Cultural Heritage. In this framework, the National Library of Florence and the National bibliographic agency, belonging to it, suffered a significant reshaping of their output, the Italian National Bibliography (BNI), due to the reduction of people in its editorial staff. The search for solutions to cope with this difficult situation lead to two main decisions, both based on the meaning of public service and on the cooperation principle. The first had the result of the free and online publication of the Italian National Bibliography, starting from May 2016, so that aligning the BNI to other National European Bibliographies. The latter lead to a collaboration project that on one side confirmed the role of the National Library of Florence as bibliographic, technical and editorial coordinator, and on the other opens the National Bibliography to a certain number of libraries with specific traits (legal deposition coverage and subject specialisation), so that contributing to a collaborative Italian National Bibliography.
This article tests out the feasibility of identifying the 'flâneur' as a mode of observation or being, in contemporary South Korean cinema and explores the extent to which the flâneur may illuminate ...the relationships forged between characters and the urban space of Seoul in the two films: Breathless (Ddongpari, Yang Ik-june, 2008) and Café Noir (Kape neuwareu, Jeong Seong-il, 2009). The two 'romantic' couples in these films walk the streets of Seoul, only to discover their inherent inability to socially integrate and fulfil romantic desire. I pay particular attention to the presentation of two locations - the streets of the tourist district Insadong in the former, and the newly renovated and gentrified Cheonggyecheon stream area in the latter - and examine how neither 'traditional' nor modern spaces allow for emotional satisfaction for the protagonists.
